Bin Trap

The Best Way to Get Organized Is to Get Rid of Stuff: Weeding

Let’s get honest about something that clutters both our homes and our minds: the idea that we can “organize” our way out of too much stuff.

If you’ve ever wandered the aisles of a home store, arms full of bins, baskets, and drawer dividers, hoping this is finally the thing that will bring order to your chaos—you’re not alone. But here’s the hard truth: organizing doesn’t start with storage. It starts with weeding.

What Is Weeding?

Weeding is the process of thoughtfully and consistently letting go of what you no longer need, use, or love. It’s not about buying more containers or finding clever hiding spots. It’s about owning less.

Mindset Matters More Than Containers

So often we treat clutter like it’s a storage problem, when really, it’s a volume problem. We don’t need more bins—we need less in the bins.

We’ve been sold the idea that there’s a perfect system out there. If we just find the right shelf or the perfect color-coded label, it will all click into place. But organizing isn’t a magic trick. If your home is overflowing, the only real solution is subtraction.

Weeding is powerful because it forces you to ask the questions:

·      “Do I use this?”

·      “Do I need this?”

·      “Do I love this?”

·      “Do I even remember why I have this?”

·      And so many more!

It asks you to be honest about what matters now—not what used to matter, or what might matter someday.

Less Stuff = Less Stress

When we keep only what truly serves us, we reduce decision fatigue, visual overwhelm, and even emotional clutter.

It becomes easier to find what you need, easier to clean, and easier to breathe. And once you experience that lightness? You’ll start to crave it in every room!

Final Thought

Before you invest in more “solutions,” invest in weeding. Open that drawer, that cupboard, that closet—and let things go.

The most freeing part of getting organized isn’t putting everything into the perfect container. It’s realizing you don’t need most of it at all.

If this post has inspired you to start weeding or rethinking your approach to organization—that’s great! This is the first step toward creating a home that feels lighter, calmer, and more intentional.
